Lars Rettkowitz — German guitarist born in 1975 — has been Freedom Call's guitarist since 2005, which makes him the band's second longest-serving member after founder Chris Bay. He joined in the period when Freedom Call had already settled its identity — the luminous power metal of choral refrains and major harmonies that the band itself christened "happy metal". He is on The Circle of Life (2005), Dimensions (2007), Legend of the Shadowking (2010) and all the output that followed, up to Silver Romance (2024). The guitar in this style works with a well-defined vocabulary: fast triplet riffs, two-voice harmonies and melodic solos built as themes. There is no room for dissonance or extreme heaviness — what the music asks for is clarity and precision, and any smudge in the playing shows immediately in a production as clean as Freedom Call's. Twenty years in the same band, in a genre of unstable line-ups, is what defines his run. Freedom Call built a loyal audience precisely by not changing, and the stability of its musicians is part of that.
