Lee Malia — British guitarist — is a co-founder of Bring Me the Horizon and, besides Oliver Sykes, the only member present throughout the band's history. His continuity is what makes the group's transformation audible. Malia wrote raw deathcore riffs on Count Your Blessings (2006) and, fifteen years later, guitar arrangements serving alternative rock songs with synthesizers and orchestration. It is the same player crossing genres that normally require different musicians. That crossing imposed a constant re-education. In deathcore the guitar is the dominant element: heavy riff, low tuning, permanent foreground. On the later records — Sempiternal (2013), That's the Spirit (2015), amo (2019) — it came to share space with electronic layers and to serve the song rather than lead it, which means knowing when not to play. Malia is, in that sense, the element that ensures Bring Me the Horizon remains recognisable as a band rather than a studio project: however much the production changes, the guitar vocabulary remains his.
