Luke Appleton

Luke Appleton — born in England in 1986 — was Iced Earth's bassist between 2012 and 2021, part of the band's last stable line-up. His arrival comes in the period when the group was reorganising under Stu Block on vocals, and his stay of almost a decade is long by the standards of a band marked by frequent changes. He took part in Plagues of Babylon (2014) and Incorruptible (2017), as well as the tours of that period. The function demands a specific discipline. The bass in Iced Earth follows Jon Schaffer's riffs in unison — fast, repetitive triplets played with mechanical picking — which means reproducing across whole tracks a pattern that offers no variation and no room for phrasing of one's own. It is work of endurance as much as of precision. He also works in Absolva, the British heavy metal band he shares with his brother, and in other projects of the English scene. He left Iced Earth in 2021, when the group ceased activity.
