Magnus Karlsson

Magnus Karlsson has been Primal Fear's guitarist and principal composer since 2009, and is one of the most productive writers in European melodic metal. Born in Sweden in 1973, he joined an already established German band and reorganised much of its writing. His contribution was to bring method. Karlsson composes in volume and with consistency: he builds broad choruses, guitar harmonies in thirds and structures that favour melody over virtuosity — an approach audible from 16.6 (2009) onward, which carried the band through albums such as Unbreakable (2012), Rulebreaker (2016), Apocalypse (2018) and Metal Commando (2020). That writing capacity has made him a recurring figure in the genre's projects. He was the composer and instrumentalist of the Allen/Lande series, bringing together Symphony X's Russell Allen and the Norwegian Jørn Lande; he keeps Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall, where he also takes on vocals and keyboards; he is part of The Ferrymen; and he worked with Michael Kiske and Amanda Somerville on the Kiske/Somerville project. He remains in Primal Fear in the reorganised 2024 line-up, alongside Ralf Scheepers, Mat Sinner, Thalìa Bellazecca and André Hilgers, with whom he recorded Domination (2025).
