Marc Burnash — bassist and vocalist — is part of Trillium, the project led by singer and songwriter Amanda Somerville. Trillium is an unusual case: it was born as the authorial vehicle of a vocalist who was already a known figure behind the scenes of European metal — Somerville worked as a vocal coach and guest singer for Avantasia, Epica, Kamelot and Aina before signing a record of her own. Alloy (2011) and Tectonic (2018) are the work in which she appears as author rather than guest. Burnash's role combines bass and vocals, which in a symphonic metal repertoire carries specific weight: the vocal layers are part of the songs' architecture, not decoration, and sustaining them live requires the instrumentalists to sing too.
