Marco Lambert — musician — works in the European metal and heavy rock circuit. The European metal scene has a characteristic distinguishing it from all others: institutional continuity. Specialist labels founded in the 1980s are still operating; festivals created in the same period have gone on happening annually for four decades; and there is a chain of studios, producers and engineers serving the genre exclusively. That allows something rare: long careers. A European metal musician can work professionally for thirty years within the same circuit, recording with different bands, taking part in projects and playing festivals that already existed when they started. It is the opposite of what happens in scenes without structure, where activity depends entirely on individual effort and tends to break off when personal circumstances change. Europe turned metal into a professional field — small, but stable enough to sustain those who work inside it.
