Mark Tremonti — American guitarist and songwriter born in 1974 — is the author of much of the rock that dominated American radio at the turn of the century, first with Creed and then with Alter Bridge. Creed was a commercial phenomenon of rare scale: tens of millions of records sold in the late 1990s, with Tremonti writing the music and signing the riffs that held the songs up. It was also one of the most criticised bands of its generation — what was rarely disputed, even among critics, was the guitarist's competence. Alter Bridge, formed in 2004 with Myles Kennedy on vocals, is where his writing gained another dimension: heavier material, more elaborate structures and real room for solos. It is the band in which Tremonti appears as a musician, not only as a writer of hits. He also keeps the solo band Tremonti, with a repertoire closer to thrash, and recorded an album of Frank Sinatra songs whose proceeds went to organisations linked to Down syndrome — his daughter was born with the condition. It is a path crossing very different musical contexts with the same technical seriousness.
