Matthew Greywolf — born in Germany in 1977 — is Powerwolf's guitarist, co-founder and principal composer. The band was built as a closed conceptual project, and that is his work and his brother Charles's. Powerwolf is not merely a power metal band with werewolf subject matter: it is a complete system — name, characters, inverted religious iconography, church organ, Gregorian choirs, stage costume — kept with absolute coherence across ten albums and twenty years. As a composer, Greywolf writes riffs of simple and memorable structure, deliberately subordinated to the chorus. It is a choice against the genre's instinct, which usually prizes technical display: in Powerwolf the guitar makes room for the organ and for Attila Dorn's operatic voice, and the track is built to be sung by a crowd. That discipline is what turned the band into one of Europe's biggest festival names. He also designs the group's visual identity, including covers and stage sets — which makes him, in practice, the author of both the sound and the image that became inseparable in Powerwolf.
