Matthias Lange — German guitarist — is a co-founder of Metalium, the band that built at the turn of the 2000s one of German power metal's most coherent bodies of work. Metalium was put together in 1998 by bassist Lars Ratz with a rare proposition: each record would be a numbered chapter of a continuous narrative. Lange was part of the classic line-up, the one that recorded the start of that sequence, at a moment when German power metal was in its most productive phase — Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian and Edguy setting the genre's standard in Europe. The guitar in this style has a double function: to hold the riff at constant speed and to deliver melodic solos built as themes rather than as demonstrations. It is a vocabulary coming straight from 1980s British heavy metal, filtered through the German school. Metalium reached eight records by 2009 and returned to activity in 2023 with a renewed line-up. The repertoire Lange helped create remains the basis of what the band plays.
