Nibbs Carter has been Saxon's bassist since 1988, and is the longest-serving player of that instrument in the band's whole history. Born in 1966, he came in replacing Paul Johnson and remains in the current line-up, which makes him one of the group's four pillars alongside Biff Byford, Paul Quinn and Nigel Glockler. His function is support and physical presence. Carter plays with a full tone and firm attack, holding the harmonic base beneath two guitars that occupy the foreground — and live he is one of the most visible elements on stage, with a restless presence that contrasts with the usual discretion of bassists in the genre. He is on everything from Solid Ball of Rock (1991) onward, across Graham Oliver's departure, the legal dispute over the name and the long rebuilding that returned Saxon to continuous activity.
