Nick Guttera

Nick Guttera — Brazilian guitarist — was part of Mitrium, a São Paulo band active between 1990 and 1994. Mitrium left a single record, Eyes of Time (1993), remembered today mainly as Edu Falaschi's first recording — then just past twenty, long before Symbols and Angra. But the record stands as a document in its own right: it shows what a Brazilian melodic metal band could produce at a moment when practically nothing existed in terms of infrastructure. Mitrium's guitar follows the vocabulary of the European metal that reached Brazil through imports and taped copies — Iron Maiden, Helloween, Queensrÿche. Learning that repertoire in that context meant working it out by ear, with no score, no tablature and no teacher. The band ended in 1994, a year before Angra released Angels Cry and completely changed the horizon of what was possible for a metal band in Brazil.
