Olaf Lenk — German guitarist — founded At Vance in 1998 and is the only constant member throughout the band's history. His mark is a choice almost no other power metal group has taken so far: At Vance adapts pieces of classical music into a metal format. Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach — not as decorative quotation in an intro, but as entire tracks, with the original melody rewritten for guitar and full band. It is the neoclassical vocabulary taken literally. That demands two simultaneous competences of Lenk: technical execution at the level those pieces require, and arrangement work — deciding what survives from the score, what transposes to the guitar, and how to accommodate a line written for violin in a metal band without sounding like caricature. The band's own material is also his, across nine albums from No Escape (1999) to Facing Your Enemy (2012). At Vance went through three singers — Oliver Hartmann, Mats Levén and Rick Altzi — and several complete line-ups; Lenk crossed all of it, and the band exists as a function of him.
