Oskar Montelius — born in Sweden in 1980 — was a founding guitarist of Sabaton, in the band between 1999 and 2012. He was in the band throughout the phase in which its identity took shape, recording Primo Victoria (2005), Attero Dominatus (2006), The Art of War (2008), Coat of Arms (2010) and Carolus Rex (2012). It is the period in which Sabaton settled what it would do for the following two decades: to write exclusively about military history, with researched and dated material, and to translate that into songs of direct structure and broad chorus. He shared the guitars with Rikard Sundén, and the logic of that pair differs from what prevails in metal. There is no contest of virtuosity: the two guitars work in harmony, holding riffs that must be recognisable on first hearing and singable by thousands of people at once. He left in 2012 in the collective rupture that took four members at once, leaving only Joakim Brodén and Pär Sundström to rebuild the band.
