Paul Masvidal — born in the United States in 1971 — is the guitarist on Death's Human (1991) and co-founder of Cynic, a band that became a reference in progressive metal. His arrival in Death coincides with the most important turn of Chuck Schuldiner's career. Human abandons death metal's direct structure in favour of open harmonies, controlled dissonance and instrumental passages that demand reading, and Masvidal — with jazz training — brought exactly the vocabulary required: extended chords, phrasing that does not lean on blues scales, and a sense of space unusual in a genre built on saturation. With Sean Reinert, drummer on the same record, he carried that fusion further in Cynic, whose Focus (1993) combines death metal, jazz fusion and processed vocals in a way that had no precedent and would still be cited decades later. In 2014 he and Reinert publicly came out as gay, a gesture without parallel in extreme metal until then, and one with lasting resonance in the discussion of the subject inside that world.
