Paulo Jr. — Sepultura's bassist — is the band's longest-serving active member, present from the earliest years and the only one to have crossed its entire history without interruption. He joined right at the start, in Belo Horizonte, when Sepultura was a teenage raw death metal band recording in precarious conditions in 1980s Brazil — no label infrastructure, no touring circuit, no international prospect of any kind. He recorded from Morbid Visions (1986) to Quadra (2020), the entire discography. That continuity crossed everything: the rise to the first rank of world thrash with Beneath the Remains (1989) and Arise (1991), the rhythmic turn of Chaos A.D. (1993) and Roots (1996), Max Cavalera's traumatic departure, Derrick Green's arrival, Igor Cavalera's departure. In a band marked by public ruptures and disputes between founders, Paulo Jr. is the element that never moved. His function in the repertoire changed along with the sound: in the fast thrash of the 1980s, the bass follows the guitars in unison; from Chaos A.D. onwards, with low tunings and mid tempos, the bass line comes to define the weight of the tracks together with the drums — two opposite regimes performed by the same musician across almost forty years.
