Ralf Scheepers

Ralf Scheepers consolidated his reputation as one of the most powerful voices in German metal in the 1980s, fronting Tyran’ Pace. International projection came with Gamma Ray, by Kai Hansen, on the albums Heading for Tomorrow, Sigh No More and Insanity and Genius. Its sharp, metallic and aggressive timbre helped establish the band's initial identity, combining the speed of power metal with the direct influence of Rob Halford. After leaving Gamma Ray, Scheepers was among the names considered to replace Halford in Judas Priest, although he never participated in rehearsals. In 1997, he founded Primal Fear alongside bassist Mat Sinner. The band regained the muscle of traditional heavy metal, adding modern production, arena choruses and the usual Germanic precision, because apparently someone needed to supervise the correct functioning of the double bass drums. Scheepers became the group's main element of continuity, present from their debut album until Domination, released in 2025. At the same time, he released the solo album Scheepers and participated in works by Avantasia, Ayreon, Therion, Xandria and Shadow Gallery. Its importance lies not only in its vocal range, but in the combination of power, clarity and resistance, characteristics that have kept it as a reference in heavy and power metal for more than four decades. Ralf Scheepers didn't reinvent the metallic vocal. He did something equally difficult: he preserved its classic form without turning it into a museum piece.
