Rex Brown — born in Texas on 27 July 1964 — has been Pantera's bassist since the band's early years, present across the entire discography and in the reunion line-up begun in 2022. His function in the group's sound is structural and often underrated. Dimebag Darrell's riffs are syncopated and full of empty space — the groove metal effect depends precisely on the pauses — and it fell to the bass to fill that ground without erasing the breaks. Brown plays with a full tone and firm attack, holding the harmony while guitar and drums work the rhythmic displacement. He was also the member who kept the greatest distance from the conflicts that destroyed the band. When Pantera ended in 2003, in a bitter rupture between Phil Anselmo and the Abbott brothers, Brown remained on reasonable terms with both sides — which is why he was a necessary piece for the 2022 reunion to be possible at all. He also played in Down alongside Anselmo, and published a memoir about the Pantera years. He remains active in the current line-up, alongside Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante.
