Rikard Sundén — born in Sweden in 1980 — was a founding guitarist of Sabaton, in the band between 1999 and 2012. His time covers the whole building of the group's identity: from its founding in Falun, a small town in inland Sweden, to Carolus Rex (2012), the album that considerably widened the band's international reach. The Sabaton of that period established the formula it would later practise — an exclusively historical-military theme, direct riffs, broad choruses and layers of keyboard that give the whole an epic dimension. Sundén shared the guitars with Oskar Montelius in the two-voice configuration that carries that format, in which clarity matters more than complexity. He left the group in 2012 together with Montelius, Daniel Mullback and Daniel Mÿhr, in a collective departure that reduced the band to two members and forced Joakim Brodén and Pär Sundström to rebuild it on the eve of a tour. It is one of the most critical episodes in Sabaton's history, and the group emerged from it larger than before.
