Roger Glover — born in Brecon, Wales, on 30 November 1945 — is Deep Purple's bassist in the Mark II line-up and, since 1984, a permanent member of the band. But his importance in heavy rock goes beyond the instrument. He joined together with Ian Gillan in 1969 and recorded In Rock (1970), Fireball (1971) and Machine Head (1972). His function on those records is one of binding: in a group where keyboard and guitar contested the foreground constantly, it was the bass that kept the structure standing. He left in 1973 and went on to work mainly as a producer — and it is there that his influence spreads. He produced records for Rainbow and Nazareth, and signed the production of Judas Priest's Sin After Sin (1977), one of the albums on which that band began to define the sound that would become the standard of British heavy metal. He returned to Deep Purple in 1984 for the Mark II reunion and never left again, crossing every subsequent phase and all the group's modern records. He also continues to write much of the material, usually in partnership with Gillan.
