Shane Embury — born in England in 1967 — has been Napalm Death's bassist since 1987 and is the longest-serving member of the band. That continuity is decisive for a specific reason: Napalm Death changed line-up completely more than once in its early years, to the point that by the beginning of the 1990s no founding member remained. Embury is the link that keeps the band from being a succession of different groups under the same name — he is on the entire discography since From Enslavement to Obliteration (1988). His function goes beyond the instrument. He writes much of the material and manages the group's direction, which explains the coherence of a catalogue spanning the early grindcore, the passage through death metal on Harmony Corruption (1990), the industrial phase of the 1990s and the later return to extreme speed. He simultaneously maintains an unusual number of side projects — among them Brujeria, Lock Up and Venomous Concept — acting as a kind of connecting node between different branches of British and international extreme metal.
