Shavo Odadjian

Shavo Odadjian is the bassist and co-founder of System of a Down, and the member whose function within the band is the least obvious and the most necessary. Born in Yerevan, Armenia, in 1974, he emigrated to Los Angeles as a child, and in the early days even acted as the group's manager before taking up the instrument. His role is to hold the floor. In a band where the guitar changes genre every eight bars, the vocals leap between registers and the drums follow unusual metric shifts, someone has to keep the thing tethered to the ground — and that is what Odadjian does, playing with a pick, with weight, and in a groove that rarely moves from where it sits. That anchor is what allows everything else to spin without the music collapsing. He is also responsible for the band's visual identity: he directed a good part of System's videos and always treated aesthetic presentation as part of the work, not as an accessory. Outside the group he has kept up Achozen, a partnership with RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, the project North Kingsley and, more recently, Seven Hours After Violet, whose first record appeared in 2024. Like the other members he is of Armenian descent, and recognition of the Armenian genocide is a cause the band took on collectively from the start.
