Steve Dawson was Saxon's founding bassist, a member between 1976 and 1986. Born in 1952, he took part in writing much of the classic-phase material and is on Wheels of Steel (1980), Strong Arm of the Law (1980), Denim and Leather (1981), Power & the Glory (1983) and Crusader (1984). His bass playing is direct accompaniment without ornament, the function demanded by a repertoire in which two harmonised guitars occupy the foreground and the speed rarely lets up. He left the band in 1986 and, years later, stood alongside Graham Oliver in the legal dispute over the right to use the Saxon name — litigation decided in favour of Biff Byford and Paul Quinn. Since then he has played with Oliver in the group Oliver/Dawson Saxon, devoted to the 1980s repertoire.
