Steve Edmondson — born in England in 1965 — is Paradise Lost's founding bassist, in the band since 1988 and on its entire discography. He is the most retiring member of a group already little given to exposure: he rarely gives interviews and stands still onstage. That reserve matches the function he performs. In a repertoire of slow tempos and low tunings the bass has no room for movement — it must hold the harmonic foundation constantly while Greg Mackintosh's guitars play the melodic lines that give the band its identity. He crossed every turn of the group: the death-doom of the early records, the gothic metal of Draconian Times (1995), the electronic experiment of Host (1999) — on which there is practically no electric bass — and the return to the original weight in the 2010s. With Nick Holmes, Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy he forms a founding core that has remained intact for more than thirty-five years, something practically without parallel among bands of the same longevity.
