Troy Sanders is Mastodon's bassist and one of its three vocalists, a member since the band's founding in 2000. Born in Georgia in 1973, he formed the group in Atlanta with Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor, and is the most constant vocal presence in the band live. His role is double and uncommon. As bassist he holds together harmonically a music built on riffs in irregular metres and a drummer who barely keeps time — without someone steady in that position, Mastodon simply could not work. As vocalist he delivers the rawest of the three registers: where Dailor sings clean and Hinds distorts on purpose, Sanders shouts with weight, and it is usually his voice on the heaviest passages. He is on the whole discography, from Remission (2002) to Hushed and Grim (2021), and remains in the group after Hinds's departure, in the expanded 2026 line-up that includes Nick Johnston and João Nogueira. Outside Mastodon he is part of Killer Be Killed alongside the Brazilian Max Cavalera, Greg Puciato and Ben Koller — a project in which splitting vocals between four musicians takes to the extreme the same principle he already practises in his main band.
