Yves Passarell — Brazilian guitarist — is a co-founder of Viper, one of the bands that established Brazilian metal as a real possibility. Viper was born in São Paulo in 1985, formed by teenagers — Yves and his brother Pit among them — who were learning to play while writing their own material. Soldiers of Sunrise (1987) was made under those conditions: no adequate studio, no label, no local reference for what they were attempting. The record has obvious production flaws and an energy that compensates for every one of them. In 1989 Theatre of Fate took the band to another level: melodic metal with elaborate arrangements and classical influence, in a format anticipating what Angra would do a few years later — not by coincidence, since Andre Matos was the singer. Yves's guitar is on both those records and in Viper's continuity across the following decades. Few Brazilian bands can claim to have changed the horizon of what was possible for the country's metal; Viper is one of them.
