Kiko Loureiro

Kiko Loureiro was part of the formation that defined Angra and helped establish its own language for Brazilian metal. Since Angels Cry (1993), his guitar playing has combined technical precision, neoclassical melodies, progressive structures and elements of Brazilian music. On albums such as Holy Land, Rebirth and Temple of Shadows, he also became a central composer, responsible for riffs and solos that balanced virtuosity and musical construction. His time with the group ended in 2015, after more than two decades of international projection. In the same year, he joined Megadeth and participated in Dystopia and The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!. The adaptation to thrash metal highlighted an essential characteristic of their style: enough technique to occupy any space, but discipline to serve the music. Dystopia earned Megadeth the Grammy for Best Metal Performance, making Kiko the first Brazilian musician linked to rock and heavy metal to receive the award. He stepped away from touring in 2023 and ended his time with the band to remain closer to his family. His solo career explores a wider territory, bringing together progressive metal, jazz fusion, Brazilian rhythms and instrumental composition on albums such as No Gravity, Universo Inverso, Sounds of Innocence, Open Source and Theory of Mind. In addition to recording and touring, Loureiro developed a consistent role as a teacher, author and musical entrepreneur. His legacy does not just depend on the speed or complexity of the soils, but on the ability to insert a Brazilian identity into international contexts without treating it as an ornament.
