Marcelo Barbosa has been Angra's guitarist since 2015, when he took the place left by Kiko Loureiro — who had been invited to join Megadeth. Replacing a musician of that calibre, in a band whose identity rests precisely on its guitar partnership, was one of the most exposed tasks in Brazilian metal. Born in 1975, Barbosa already had an established career when he arrived. He had been Almah's guitarist since 2007, Edu Falaschi's project, and had passed through Khallice, besides sustaining a long activity as a teacher. His reputation was exactly one of precision: a player with clean execution, exact articulation and the technical command to reproduce faithfully a repertoire written by someone else — no trivial requirement in a catalogue like Angra's, full of harmonised passages and millimetric arrangements. He debuted on record with ØMNI (2018) and continued on Cycles of Pain (2023). Over time he stopped being merely the performer of the older material and began taking part in the writing, forming with Rafael Bittencourt the third guitar partnership in the band's history. In parallel he keeps up his teaching work, with lessons and material devoted to guitar technique.
