Tobias Exxel — born in Germany in 1973 — has been Edguy's bassist since 1998, and part of the line-up that remained practically unchanged for twenty years. He joined in time for Vain Glory Opera (1998) and recorded the entire subsequent discography, up to Monuments (2017). His stay spans the band's three distinct phases: the epic power metal of the late 1990s, the straight hard rock of Rocket Ride (2006) and the return to the classic format in the 2010s. In German power metal, the bass's function is to follow the two guitars' galloping riffs in unison — a figure simple to describe and hard to execute, because any lag against the double kick is immediately audible at high tempo. In the phases closer to hard rock, the line gains room of its own and comes to define the weight of the tracks, demanding the opposite approach. Edguy is one of the rare metal bands to keep the same five musicians for two decades, and Exxel is part of that core — along with Tobias Sammet, Jens Ludwig, Dirk Sauer and Felix Bohnke.
