Chris Caffery has been Savatage's guitarist across different periods since 1987, and is one of the few musicians to have accompanied the band through practically all its phases. Born in the United States in 1967, he joined very young, around the time of Hall of the Mountain King, when the group began playing with two guitars alongside Criss Oliva. He left in the early 1990s and returned later, crossing the Zak Stevens era and the rebuilding that followed Criss's death. His function is broad by necessity: besides guitar he plays keyboards and sings, which in a rock-opera repertoire — with continuous narrative, characters and multiple vocal layers — is more useful than virtuosity. He is also a member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the project born from within Savatage, and has kept a solo career with his own albums since the 2000s.
