Gustavo Magalhães — Brazilian bassist — is part of Dark Avenger, the Curitiba band known for its epic metal of slow tempo and dark atmosphere. The bass carries a specific responsibility in this kind of repertoire. When the music is fast, momentum holds attention on its own; when it is slow, every note is exposed, and the sense of weight depends entirely on the relation between bass and drums. That is why epic metal and doom demand bassists with a fine sense of time and space — playing less, and in the right place. Dark Avenger released four records across two decades: Dark Avenger (1995), the two volumes of Tales of Avalon (2001 and 2013) on the Arthurian cycle, and The Beloved Bones: Hell (2017), released in the year vocalist Mário Linhares died. It is a band that never sought the commercial format of its generation's Brazilian power metal, and for that very reason built an identity still recognised as its own.
