Jamie Mathias — Welsh bassist — was Bullet for My Valentine's bassist in the second half of the 2010s, a transitional period in the band's history. He came in after original bassist Jason James left, and his arrival coincides with a broader reorganisation: the founding drummer would also leave, and Bullet for My Valentine would go on operating with an entirely new rhythm section, around the guitar pair of Matt Tuck and Michael Paget. He was there for Venom (2015), the record on which the band answered criticism of the lighter Temper Temper (2013) by returning to thrash metal's weight and speed — a deliberate course correction, made precisely while the line-up was being rebuilt. Bullet for My Valentine is a band whose identity has always lain in the guitars and the voice; the rhythm section changed and the repertoire stayed recognisable. Mathias belongs to the period in which that transition was carried out without the band losing its step.
