Jimmy Bain was the bassist of Dio's classic line-up and one of the band's co-founders in 1982. Born in Scotland in 1947, he had already worked with Ronnie James Dio before: the two played together in Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in the second half of the 1970s. He was on the first four albums — Holy Diver (1983), The Last in Line (1984), Sacred Heart (1985) and Dream Evil (1987) — and took part in writing much of that material, including the keyboards heard on some tracks. His bass playing is direct support, with a full tone and simple execution, a function suited to a repertoire in which voice and guitar share the entire foreground. He died on 23 January 2016, aged 68, aboard a ship during a music cruise on which he was due to perform. The cause was lung cancer, diagnosed shortly before and not publicly disclosed.
