Johnny Lee Middleton has been Savatage's bassist since 1986 and, after Jon Oliva, the longest-serving member of the band. Born in the United States in 1963, he joined in time to record Hall of the Mountain King (1987) and crossed every phase that followed: the turn to rock opera, the death of Criss Oliva, the Zak Stevens era, the hiatus of the 2000s and the reunion begun in 2023. His function required constant adaptation. On the early records the bass carries straightforward heavy metal riffs; from Gutter Ballet (1989) onwards it operates inside arrangements with piano, orchestration and narrative structures, where steadiness matters more than movement. Few bassists have had to cross so large a change of language within the same band. He has also been a member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra since its creation, following the migration of much of Savatage into the project that became one of the largest touring attractions in the United States.
