Jukka Koskinen is Nightwish's bassist, at first on tour from 2021 and an official member since. Born in Finland in 1981, he took the place left by Marko Hietala, who had been in the band for nineteen years. The succession was complicated for a specific reason: Hietala was not only a bassist but also the group's male singer, and his voice shared the lead with the main vocalist across much of the repertoire. His departure forced Nightwish to reorganise arrangements that had been settled for nearly two decades. Koskinen arrived with a career built in Finnish metal, with spells in Norther and Wintersun, and his function is direct support: in music where orchestra, choirs, keyboards and folk instruments occupy almost the whole spectrum, the bass has to hold the harmonic floor with absolute steadiness and without ornament. He recorded Yesterwynde (2024), the band's first album in the new configuration.
