Lauri Porra

Lauri Porra has been Stratovarius's bassist since 2005, and the member with the most unusual musical grounding in the whole band. Born in Finland in 1977, he is the great-grandson of Jean Sibelius — the composer who practically defined the country's musical identity — and that lineage is no genealogical curiosity: Porra has built a parallel career as a composer of orchestral music. He writes for symphony orchestra, for dance and for film, and has led projects crossing the classical repertoire with rock, including works performed by Finnish orchestras. He is also a broadly trained bassist, moving through jazz and fusion, and that background shows in Stratovarius in lines more melodic and harmonically informed than power metal usually asks for. He joined in the hardest year of the band's history, in the middle of the internal crisis, and stayed. He recorded Polaris (2009), Elysium (2011), Nemesis (2013), Eternal (2015) and Survive (2022) — that is, the entire phase after Timo Tolkki's departure, the period in which the group had to prove it existed without its founder. He keeps a solo career and works in both worlds, treating neither as a secondary activity.
