Liam Wilson — born in the United States in 1979 — has been In Flames's official bassist since 2024, and comes from a musical territory far from Swedish melodic death metal. His earlier career is tied to The Dillinger Escape Plan, the American mathcore band he belonged to for over fifteen years. That repertoire is built on dissonance, abrupt changes of metre and deliberately unstable structures — the exact opposite of In Flames's melodic, harmonised logic. That origin makes him an unusual case of recruitment. He is not a musician of the same language brought in to fill a seat, but someone who had to narrow his vocabulary: in In Flames the bass holds the harmonic ground beneath guitars playing parallel melodies, a function demanding constancy rather than displacement. He is part of the line-up the band has played with since, alongside Anders Fridén, Björn Gelotte and Chris Broderick.
