Matt Kean — British bassist — is a co-founder of Bring Me the Horizon and has been in the band since its formation in Sheffield. His continuity covers an almost complete crossing of genre: from the raw deathcore of Count Your Blessings (2006) to the alternative rock with electronics and orchestration the band plays in stadiums today. Few bands change so much without changing musicians, and Kean is one of those who crossed all of it. That change redefined his function. In deathcore the bass follows the guitars in unison, reinforcing the weight without room of its own. From Sempiternal (2013) onwards, with synthesizers and programming occupying part of the low spectrum, the bass line had to coexist with electronic layers competing for the same frequency range — an arrangement problem that does not exist in a conventional metal band, and one requiring decisions about what the bass plays and, above all, what it stops playing. With Lee Malia, Matt Nicholls and Oliver Sykes, Kean belongs to the core that sustained Bring Me the Horizon from before any recognition, when the group was a band of teenagers playing deathcore in the north of England.
