Patrice Guers — born in France in 1969 — was the bassist of Rhapsody of Fire's classic line-up, between 2002 and 2011. His time coincides exactly with the band's best-known period: Power of the Dragonflame (2002), Symphony of Enchanted Lands II – The Dark Secret (2004), Triumph or Agony (2006), The Frozen Tears of Angels (2010) and From Chaos to Eternity (2011). His function in that repertoire is particularly hard to notice, and for that very reason decisive. Rhapsody's records are dense by construction — orchestra, choir, symphonic keyboards, two guitars and drums at high speed occupy practically the whole sonic spectrum. The bass has to hold the harmonic foundation beneath that mass without competing for space: if it steps forward it muddies things; if it retreats too far the music loses its ground. He has solid technical training and comes from the French bass tradition of progressive bent, which shows in the precision with which he follows the changes of metre in the longer tracks. He left together with Luca Turilli in 2011, joining the project the guitarist then assembled.
