Peter Iwers — born in Sweden in 1975 — was In Flames's bassist between 1997 and 2016, almost twenty years covering the band's whole period of greatest reach. He joined in time for Whoracle (1997) and recorded Colony (1999), Clayman (2000), Reroute to Remain (2002) and all the output that followed — that is, both the albums that founded Gothenburg melodic death metal and those that took the group towards a more open and commercial sound. His function is to support music built on guitars harmonised in two voices. When the two guitarists play parallel melodic lines, the bass is the only element holding the underlying harmonic reference — without it, the listener would lose the ground beneath the melody. Iwers plays with a full tone and little movement, exactly what that architecture demands. He left the band in 2016 and turned to activities outside music, keeping occasional appearances in projects within the field.
