Pit Passarell

Brazil

Pit Passarell — Brazilian bassist and vocalist — is a co-founder of Viper and the figure who kept the band in existence across four decades. Viper was put together in São Paulo in 1985 by teenagers, and recorded Soldiers of Sunrise (1987) while its members were still in school. It is one of the founding records of Brazilian metal — made before any market structure for the genre existed in the country, and still with sonic ambition comparable to the European bands it took as reference. When Andre Matos left to found Angra in 1991, Passarell took on lead vocals as well as bass. That is the decision that let Viper continue: rather than seeking a replacement for one of Brazilian metal's most recognisable voices, the band reorganised from within. Since then Viper has gone through pauses, revivals and line-up changes, with Passarell as the constant axis. It is the path of someone who sustains a historic band not through success but through the refusal to let it end.
