Sam Bettley

Sam Bettley — British bassist — has been part of Asking Alexandria since its early years and is one of the band's elements of greatest continuity. His stay crossed everything that almost undid the group: Danny Worsnop's departure in 2015, Denis Stoff's brief spell, Worsnop's return in 2016 and the change of musical direction that followed — from metalcore of heavy breakdowns to a progressively more melodic heavy rock. His function in the repertoire follows that crossing. On the early records the bass followed the guitars in low tunings, reinforcing the weight of the breakdown sections without room of its own. From The Black (2016) onwards, with songs of more open structure and less instrumental density, the bass line gained definition and came to hold the harmony audibly — a change demanding an approach opposite to the previous one. With Ben Bruce and James Cassells, Bettley forms the core that kept Asking Alexandria active for more than fifteen years, through two crises that would have ended most bands in the circuit.
