Sharlee D'Angelo — born in Sweden in 1973 — has been Arch Enemy's bassist since the late 1990s, and is one of the widest-ranging musicians in Scandinavian metal. Before Arch Enemy he was part of Mercyful Fate, King Diamond's Danish band and a founding reference of European occult metal — a spell that puts him in direct contact with a lineage earlier than and distinct from the Gothenburg scene to which Arch Enemy belongs. He also plays in Witchery, a Swedish blackened thrash project. That breadth matters because Arch Enemy's repertoire demands more of the bass than death metal usually asks. The band builds its tracks on guitars harmonised in thirds and frequent changes of tempo; the bass has to hold the harmonic foundation beneath dense melodic layers and follow the guitars in unison through passages of extreme speed. With almost three decades in the band, he is — alongside Michael Amott and Daniel Erlandsson — one of the three musicians who guaranteed Arch Enemy's continuity across three different singers.
