Tchort — Terje Vik Schei, born in Norway in 1974 — was Emperor's bassist on In the Nightside Eclipse (1994), the band's debut and one of the founding records of symphonic black metal. He came in replacing Mortiis, between the self-titled EP and the recording of the album, and his function there is one of support: in a repertoire where keyboards and tremolo guitars create a dense, continuous sonic mass, the bass is what keeps the structure from dissolving. Before that he had played guitar in Green Carnation, then a death metal band. His path includes a two-year prison term, served in the early 1990s for burglary, knife assault and grave desecration — convictions that add to the criminal record of other members of that line-up, in a period when the Norwegian black metal scene was associated with a series of serious crimes. After Emperor he took up Green Carnation again and reoriented it completely, turning it into a progressive, atmospheric metal project. Light of Day, Day of Darkness (2001) consists of a single track of roughly an hour — a work of structural ambition unusual in the genre. He also belonged to Carpathian Forest and Blood Red Throne.
