Mat Sinner is the bassist, backing vocalist, producer and co-founder of Primal Fear, the band he assembled in 1997 with Ralf Scheepers. Born Mathias Lasch in Germany in 1964, he is one of the most structuring figures in German power metal — and his importance lies as much off the stage as on it. Since 1982 he has led Sinner, the band that bears his name and has run for four decades, and it is out of that experience that he operates in Primal Fear: besides the bass, he produces the records and handles the group's organisation. In a genre where many bands depend on outside producers to define their sound, Sinner does both, and Primal Fear's sonic consistency across fifteen albums — from Primal Fear (1998) to Domination (2025) — is a direct result. His musical function is support and contrast. The bass keeps the floor firm beneath two or three harmonised guitars, and his low backing vocals counterpoint Scheepers's cutting high register, giving the choruses the breadth that became the band's trademark. He also works as musical director and bassist of Rock Meets Classic, a production that brings rock singers on stage with a symphony orchestra.
