Carcass are an English extreme metal band formed in Liverpool in 1985 by guitarist Bill Steer and drummer Ken Owen. Bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker joined shortly after. Carcass are widely regarded as pioneers of grindcore and goregrind, cemented by their 1988 debut Reek of Putrefaction. Symphonies of Sickness (1989) refined the formula, while Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious (1991) marked a leap in musicianship. The band's defining turn came with Heartwork (1993), shedding grind chaos for melodic, harmonized guitar leads — a foundational album of melodic death metal that influenced the Gothenburg scene. Internal tensions culminated in Swansong (1996), after which the band split. Carcass reunited in 2007, eventually releasing Surgical Steel (2013) and Torn Arteries (2021) to critical acclaim. Today, founders Bill Steer and Jeff Walker continue to lead Carcass as respected elder statesmen of extreme metal.
